Nicolet wrestling
Jon McKay's search for a title at the Mid-States Invitational last week came up a little short when the senior 220-pounder took third.
He and coach Gus Kaufmann were looking for Nicolet's first champion at the event since Kaufmann's Nicolet teammate Amos Besaw claimed a title back in the mid-1990s.
"Jon got surprised by the strength of the Elkhorn kid (who pinned him in the semifinals)," Kaufmann said, "but he kept his wits about him and didn't have a letdown. Hopefully, this'll light a fire under him.
Overall, Kaufmann was pleased with the Knights' 23rd-place showing out of 42 schools, which was a 10-spot improvement from last season. Nicolet scored 53 points as Burlington won with 193.5 points.
McKay (18-1 overall) was pinned by Elkhorn's Dakota Johnson in 2:57. He bounced back and defeated Iowa Grant (decision) and New Trier (pin) opponents, to secure his third.
The only other top-eight finish for Nicolet was a seventh from Keondre Walton-Cooper, who was seventh at 182. Walton-Cooper went 5-2 for the tournament, losing to the same Fort Atkinson opponent twice. He defeated Shorewood's Antoine Davis, 3-1, for his final spot.
"This was a great tournament for Keondre," Kaufmann said. "He's always had the talent, now he's got the fire lit within him. He's not losing the close ones anymore."

It takes stamina to place in the 56-school Oshkosh On The Water Tournament and Blue Dukes 106-pounder Max Carlin had more than enough, going 7-2 over two days to earn third.
"By the end of the second day, everybody's pretty beaten up," Blue Dukes coach Dale Loebel said. "It's a grind. It's a matter of who can handle the pain the best. But Max handled himself well. He beat some good guys out there. He went to another level."
Carlin, who went to 21-3 for the season, claimed all his matches by decision with the exception of the final one, an injury default over a Slinger opponent. Along the way, he beat a fine Chippewa Falls wrestler in double overtime as well as a returning state qualifier from Peshtigo.
Other good efforts included Ben Lehrmann at 132, who was 10th (5-3 in the tournament, 19-5 overall); Rashadeem Gray was 11th at 152 (5-3, 18-6); and Nick Levings, was 12th at 182 (3-4, 11-5).
Joey Davey at 120 (3-2, 11-5) and Andrew Reidy at 160 (2-2, 12-5) were also praised for their efforts.
Bay finished 34th in the tourney with 98 points as Coleman won with 391.5.
